TRON — Short-Term Earthquake Forecasting Technology

TRON is a technology that detects earthquakes before they happen — hours, days, or even weeks before. How? By collecting and analyzing data on changes in the behavior of domestic and farm animals.

Unlike traditional seismology, TRON does not rely on satellites or expensive sensors. It uses a distributed network of human observations to detect early signals of an impending earthquake.



Why it matters

TRON’s mission is to give people the only thing that matters in the event of a disaster: time to evacuate. We can’t stop earthquakes. But we can be prepared.


Status

We are currently seeking investment (€100,000) for a pilot deployment of the MVP in seismic zones.

Japan raises specter of more devastating quake

The Nankai Trough extends for hundred of kilometers parallel with the Japanese coast, off heavily populated areas south of Tokyo. A new report has issued a chilling warning of what a major quake in the trough would mean. An earthquake in the Nankai Trough could be on a scale 10 times that of the disaster that befell Tohoku in March 2011. More worryingly, experts warn that a mega-quake is overdue. A little over two years after vast stretches of northeastern Japan were laid waste by the worst natural disaster to strike Japan in living memory, killing close to 19,000 people, a 400-page study has warned that a far more serious threat lies brooding just off the coast. Claim:   The “Big One,” the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that can possibly hit Metro Manila, will strike the Philippines in August 2025.  Rating:  FALSE Why we fact-checked this:  The post bearing the claim was made on July 4 by the Facebook page “God loves us.” As of writing, it has received 8,100 reactions, 7,600 comments, and 270 shares. [淡路島地震] 大震災の教訓生きたか

去年の3月11日なにしてた VICTIMS MAY BE LESS きのう早朝、震度６弱の地震が兵庫県の淡路島を襲った。マグニチュード（Ｍ）は６．３と推定され、関西や四国、中国地方など西日本一帯が強く揺れた。西日本で発生した震度６以上の大地震は６４００人超の犠牲者を出した１９９５年の阪神大震災以来である。 　二十数人の負傷者が出たが、揺れの大きかった割に死者がいなかったのは不幸中の幸いだ。とはいえ１８年前に阪神大震災の激震を経験した住民には、再び恐怖と悪夢がよみがえったことだろう。 　震源地は淡路島の地下１０キロ付近で、阪神大震災を引き起こした野島断層に近い別の断層が動いた可能性がある。大震災の余震域南端にあたるとみられ、大震災と関連した動きかどうかは検討する必要がある。今後も震度５前後の余震が続く可能性は十分にあり、警戒を緩めるわけにはいかない。 　今回の淡路島地震は、国民の目がこぞって東日本大震災の余震の多い東北地方に向いているところに起きた。西日本の住民は阪神大震災を忘れたわけではないだろうが、虚を突かれた形だ。あらためて「地震列島」に住んでいる現実を思い知らされる。 　そこで問われるのは、１８年前の大震災の教訓が生かされたかどうかである。家屋の倒壊を防ぐ耐震化や免震化の取り組みが進んでいれば被害家屋は減少しているだろうし、電気・水道・ガスなどのライフラインへのダメージも最小限に抑えられたはずだ。 　大震災の教訓を生かした災害に強い街づくりがどう進んだか、住民は十分に備えていたのか、などを検証するいい機会である。既に兵庫県は大震災を機に、被害を自動的に予測し、初動態勢に役立てる独自の「フェニックス防災システム」を稼働させている。このシステムは、県内の三つの震度計が震度４以上の揺れをキャッチすると、自動的に起動し、各市町村や警察、消防、電力、ガス会社などに置かれた端末に被害予測が表示され、情報を共有できるのが特長だ。 　今回は、発生から約４時間後に避難者向けに非常食３０００食、毛布３０００枚などを淡路島に発送した。システムが予測したほど大きな被害は把握されていないが、いち早く余裕を持った支援態勢に乗り出すことができたのは大きな成果であり評価したい。他の自治体も兵庫県のような防災システムの構築を急ぐ必要がある。 　地震予知研究は思うように結果が出せず、直前に地震発...

An earthquake of 8.8 magnitude, one of the 10 strongest ever recorded,  struck  Russia’s Far East early on Wednesday, leading to a tsunami alert throughout the Pacific region. Even as “tsunami waves” were reported in Japan and Alaska, panic spread through Japan to the US state of Hawaii. Global earthquake detection and warning using Android phones
